For anyone who needs directions to get to tournaments by mass transit......

here is a helpful link provided by the MTA: http://www.trips123.com/trip_planner/default.asp All you have to do is enter the address you're starting from and your destination, and it'll give you a variety of options on how to get there. I guess it's the least they can do, given how much transit fares have gone up recently. :) Rudy

Stormy Weather

It's been raining all night. It's the middle of April, and Spring is in the air. The city's been covered in a foggy mist all day, and it makes me think of my mood for the past few months: dour, unmotivated, lazy- in other words, months spent without handball. There's a noticeable change in my behavior when I don't play handball, the least of which is a downturn in physical activity. I've got to try quitting cigarettes again. I need to work on my off-hand, and re-build my game again. You can't pl… Continue

B SINGLES EDISON HIGH SCHOOL-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Lil' Eddie Santiago is holding a B Singles Tournament at Edison High School this weekend.

To get there, take:

E train to Union Turnpike. Exit train station, cross Queens Boulevard and then catch the Q46 to Long Island Jewish Hospital--the school is located at 164th Street and Grand Central-the driver should tell you where the stop is

Can't stop, don't stop.

I MUST stop running around my right. I think that I've made a conscious effort to work on my left in recent months, which has led to overuse on that side. My doubles game is suffering because of it, and my singles game too. I've been watching some top-level singles games in recent days, and I've noticed that players with a left off-hand will almost hug or straddle the left sideline and give themselves the rest of the court to cover with their right. I've got to incorporate this into my games. Th… Continue

Reminder: Playing to win

Given what I've stated about doubles strategy already, sometimes you have to fight against your strongest impulses in doubles--because it takes 2 people to win. Unfortunately, impulses are often times "unconscious" and it can hard for a player to correct his own mistakes. That's what's great about doubles: an extra set of hands, eyes and a brain is a STRENGTH, not a weakness.

In light of that statement, yesterday, my partner Bob kept telling me not to run around my right

Doubles strategy

Doubles strategy can be deceptively simple. There are some basic principles that can be followed, such as playing the middle, cutting off angles, and lobbing to isolate partners. The possibilities for responses are so varied in actual match play, however, that it is up to the individual to determine how a rally plays out. I've recently begun to note the similarities between a handball match and chess. There seems to be a opening, a middle game and an end game. Different caliber players tend to h… Continue

getting fit....and then staying that way

Staying in shape takes work. I know this will not come as a surprise to a lot of people out there, but when you've got bad eating habits and a lazy routine it almost takes a miracle to get into shape. At least, it feels that way. Little by little, I've been changing the way I eat and exercise, and even though it's taken months, I've started to see the changes. And when you begin to see those changes, you feel good about yourself.

88th and Atlantic

Went over to 88th today, and didn't leave till it was too dark. Went with Patrick, and we got in a couple of singles and doubles games. He had me 8-1 as it was getting dark, but I caught a few lucky breaks and won 11-9. His serve was virtually unreturnable for those first 9 points. I couldn't even move my feet on a couple of them.

Patrick shook Buddy Gantt's hand before we started playing, and we are both of the opinion that…

I really appreciate your comments... You just recently missed 1 of the Best B Singles tournament that I had at Vancourtlandt Park on April 19th... Too bad myself & Ty did not win that game because we were killing them & all of a sudden we lost our momentum... Still, those games just make me stronger the next time I face them...

I will look forward to help you improve your skills... I usually play at Vancourtlandt at night... You can always reach me on my cell # 914-438-2640 anytime you are in the area...

Also, I will be hosting a few more tournaments this year with our organization ProHandball Alliance... (P.H.A.) If you look at Armando page on smackitsports or lefty Charlie's page on smackitsports.com you will see what took place as far as photos...

Again, It will be a pleasure to help you get to the next level...

See You Soon !

Thanks for the props about the new website...it has not caught on yet. As you know I originally started the HandballCity members website...turned Smackitsports.com and it has become very successful. I had planned a major promotion early this season...but had to deal with some family heath issues. All is good now. I even got married this summer.

HandballSpace will be a great communication tool for the future. The internet is here to stay...and HandballCity will try to stay cutting edge.

Rudy, You are currently the King of HandballSpace...the most informative page. Later, Jimmy
