Hey Guys & Gals,

I've created some very useful, easy to read and organize tournament chart and score card. I suggest everyone start using these for future tournaments. No offense to the creator of the original tournament chart, but this one is easier to use and read.

The tournament chart is easier to write on if you print on legal size paper. Leave it blank, keep it on a clip board and fill it in throughout the tournament. The next day fill the chart with typing instead of handwriting and post where ever you like.

What to do when its an odd number?
8, 16, 32, & 64 are even tournament numbers. By's, can happen at anytime during a tournament depending on when the number of teams left reach an odd number like 3, 5, 7, 9 etc.... When this happens this should be the pattern to follow. Let use 7 for example.

Team 1 plays 2 (score is 21-6), 3 plays 4 (score is 21-12), and 5 plays 6 (21-19)... 7th Team plays the winner of the game that had the biggest win by points. Team 1 would play team 7 since they had the biggest win over thier opponent. It's the only logical way of running these odd number tournaments....

For the tourney that happend this weekend with 12 teams.... The buy would have happend in the 3rd round using my formula above. Start with 12 teams, then 6 teams, then 3 teams. This would lessen confusion.

The score card is self explanitory.

MY POINT EXACTLY EFREN. HELEN AND I WERE SAYIN THE SAME EXACT THING. THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD'VE BEEN. ALL 12 TEAMS PLAY ROUND ONE, WITH THEIR NAMES PICKED FROM THE HAT INSTEAD OF NUMBERS. THEN ROUND 2, 6TEAMS PLAY, THEN ROUND THREE WOULD BE WITH THE BUY.

Hi Lianna,

If any BYES are assigned they need to be in the first round. Assigning BYES in the third round would give a team an unfair advantage. Also, BYES should only be given when you start a tournament without a "perfect" number of players: 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. Check out my response to Efren's post.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Lewis

I do not agree with buys in the first round if there is and even number of teams to start.... (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) should never need to have buys in the first round. Only start buys when an odd number appears (3, 5, 7, 9, 11).... Buys should only happen in the first round if the number of teams is an odd number from the start... I explained an example of this above in the post.

As far as pick out of the hat to decide who plays who, when the odd number appears is unfair.... Pick out of the hat should only happen to organize the chart at the beginning of the tournament. There should be no seeding in Florida since there is more B players than anything. Our ranking system may be available after 1 or 2 years of rating players.

Getting people to understand the method you use will always be complicated and cause contridiction. The method I created came from my intelligence & logic. We've had problems here with the brackets as well. In discussion with several people everyone seems to understand my logical fairness. I'm just trying to make it easier and understandable for everyone.

I'm not trying to do battle of the brackets.... But, many will agree with "my method" for uneven numbers over "by the book method"

Efren,

I see your point with regards to the "BYES". However, the method that is the most fair and IS standard use in any type of tournament play would be assigning "BYES" if you do not have a perfect number: 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. For example, if you have 12 teams, 4 "BYES" are awarded. Also, "BYES" are ONLY awarded in the first round of play in both winner's bracket and loser's bracket, if double elimination. Remember, the purpose of a "BYE" is to even the bracket out. Check out the following website:

http://www.printyourbrackets.com/

As for for who gets the "BYE", unless you have a proven ranking system that works for your handball league, then it should be randomly assigned.

Hope this helps:)

Efren,

Thank you for your input on the brackets. As players, we ALL should be able to comprehend how these brackets work instead of just playing the game.

Hopefully, like you stated we could have a uniform bracket like the one you set up for future tournaments and so forth. If we ALL can be in agreement to your logical and fair system, it will make tournaments run more smoothly and unproblematic.

Efren,

Sorry can't help it. Listen, in the example you posted above with 7 teams, you actually end up giving team 7 a BYE, which would be correct, since the next highest number is 8.

When I started doing tournaments many years ago, I struggled with this as well. The more you do tournament, the more you will realize that assigning "BYES" in the first round IS the right way to do it. Go to the website I provided earlier and print out a bracket for 7 teams, and you will realize that you did the same thing. I think people get caught up on the term BYE.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions @ 610-653-0616. Believe me, it was not easy at first. I finally understood brackets after I did an assignment for a Physical Education college course:(

Lewis

Nice scorecard. I'd like to use it in my league. Can you send it to my personal email, since you have it on a READ-ONLY.
